Summary
Jesus’ Crucifixion
Jesus carried his cross with help of Simon, a Cyrenian man, to Golgotha, “Place of the Skull,” where Jesus was to be crucified. The soldiers offered Jesus bitter wine, but he refused. He was nailed to the cross, in between two other criminals. After crucifying him, the soldiers rolled dice in decision of who got his clothes. A sign was nailed above Jesus’ head that read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews” (Mt 27:37). The soldiers and some people mocked Jesus, telling him to save himself if he was the son of God. Many women including Mary were sobbing at Jesus’ feet but he told them not to weep for him but for themselves. Jesus gave his beloved disciple his mother to care for her when he died.
The Death of Jesus
At noon on that day, a darkness fell on the land until three o’clock. At three, Jesus spoke in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (Mk 15: 34) translated into, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Mk 15:34). Some thought he was crying out to Elijah the phrophet. People gave him sour wine while other yelled to wait to see if Elijah came. Jesus cried out again and the temple’s sanctuary split in two, the earth shook, and the tomb were opened. Jesus drew his last breath and people proclaimed he was the Son of God. The soldiers broke the other two criminals legs to insure they died quicker but Jesus was already dead. So they pierced his side with a spear and blood and water poured out. His followers including his mother and other women stood by and watched.

Similarities:
1. In all gospels, “Jesus of Nazareth, king of the jews” is written on his cross.
2. The guards cast lots to divide his clothes. “They divided his garments by casting lots”(Lk 23: 34)
Differences:
1. In Luke, one of the other crucified men mocked Jesus, and the other stood up for him. Jesus tells this man that he will be with him in paradise. “Amen I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Lk 23:43).
2. In john, Jesus’ side is pierced to make sure he is dead. Water and blood flows out. “But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs" (Jn 19:33).
